April 2019 Newsletter

It has been a little over 4 months since the Board of Trustees 2018-2022 have been sworn in. Over this period, we have been learning about our roles and responsibilities as Trustees, as we deal with the ongoing business of the board. The Trustees have been very fortunate to be able to rely on the expertise of our professional and committed senior staff. I would like to extend my thanks and gratitude for their support in helping guide us in our stewardship of the wonderful gift of publicly funded Catholic education.

The Board and Senior Staff are starting to work on the budget process for next year. As I am sure you are aware, there have been some recent changes to the education system and the funding of the education system by the Provincial Government. Though any reduction in funding is a challenge and will put pressure on our system, we have a very experienced and competent senior staff who will be able to provide direction and guidance to make sure we minimize the negative effects for the recent changes on our students. As a tax-payer in Ontario you have a voice and you have a right for your voice to be heard. Please exercise that right with your Provincial MPP, Minster of Education and Premier.

Locally, as you have experienced, Milton is a vibrant and growing community. The pace of growth will be increasing as the Provincial Government’s mandate for increased density will bring us new challenges to accommodate for that growth. Our Board has planned and is prepared for the growth. However, as per the Education Act, new school capital funding can only come from the Provincial Government. The current Provincial Government has not called for any new capital funding projects. We are approaching a critical point in Milton where our secondary schools, even with the addition to Bishop Reding, will be at capacity in 2021. As a result, we need to start construction on Milton #3 CSS in 2019. We are petitioning the Minster of Education and local politicians to support our urgent calls for release of the capital funds we require. We will need your voices to join ours in the call for the Provincial Government to support the required infrastructure that is need based on the mandated growth set out in the Ontario Places to Grow Act.  Your voice matters please join us.
